They sit mainly across Fujian and Jiangsu, with Fuzhou and Changzhou each holding 13% of this category in our sample, Fuan (11% of this category in our sample) close behind, and further suppliers in Ningde, Wuxi, Chongqing, Weifang and Taizhou. The top three cities together account for 38% of the 105 suppliers profiled here, across 31 cities: Fuzhou, Changzhou and Fuan. Changzhou is distinguished by a diesel-engine industrial base that goes back to Housheng Machinery Factory (1913) and Changzhou Diesel Engine Factory (1964, later Changchai Co.), which mass-produced China's first self-designed single-cylinder diesel engine (S195). Wuxi has a diesel and gas generator-set cluster anchored by Wuxi Kaipu Power (founded 1998) in the National High-tech Zone, where the original company spun off co-located competitors and a local chain for engines, generators, control systems and enclosures. Chongqing's suppliers sit with firms that moved from motorcycle engines into general-purpose small engines and portable generator sets, including Zongshen's general-purpose power line.

For a buyer, that geography means more than one trip if you want to compare the main pockets. Changzhou is stronger on the diesel-engine side of the chain; Wuxi is denser for complete generator sets and the nearby controls and enclosure suppliers that grew up around Kaipu; Chongqing leans toward portable and small gasoline-linked sets tied to motorcycle-engine makers. Fuzhou, Fuan and Ningde appear together in the sample without a separately documented speciality in the research used here, so treat them as part of the broader Fujian presence rather than a titled cluster.
