Diesel engines concentrate most heavily in Changzhou, where the machinery industry dates to Housheng Machinery Factory in 1913 and the Changzhou Diesel Engine Factory founded in 1964 (now Changchai Co., listed 1994), which mass-produced China's first self-designed single-cylinder diesel engine (S195). Of the 47 suppliers profiled in this category, the top three cities account for 43%, with Changzhou alone at 30% of this category in our sample; the category spans 23 cities and the main concentrations are Changzhou, Yancheng and Weifang. Yancheng and Weifang each hold 7% of this category in our sample and sit inside agricultural-machinery bases: Yancheng has produced tractors and internal combustion engines since the 1950s (firms include Jianghuai Power and Mahindra Yueda (Yancheng) Tractor Co.); Weifang forms part of the Weifang-Linyi-Rizhao smart agricultural machinery equipment cluster, recognized as a National Advanced Manufacturing Cluster by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), and is the headquarters of Weichai Power. Wuxi appears for diesel and gas generator sets around Kaipu Power (founded 1998), with a local chain of engines, generators, controls and enclosures.

For a buyer, Changzhou is the densest single stop for diesel engines proper, while Yancheng and Weifang tilt toward engines for agricultural machinery and Wuxi toward generator sets. The supporting chain therefore shifts with the city—long-run engine manufacturing in Changzhou, agricultural-machinery ecosystems in Yancheng and Weifang, and genset components in Wuxi—so destination should match end use.
