Read the badges literally
Each badge answers one narrow question. Trouble starts when buyers read them as a general seal of approval.
Gold Supplier
The supplier pays for an annual membership tier. The years counter measures how long they have paid.
Not an audit, not a factory check, not a quality signal. It proves marketing budget and channel commitment.
Verified Supplier
A third-party inspector (SGS, TÜV, Intertek and similar) assessed the company on site and filed a report you can open.
The badge is only as good as the report behind it — read which premises were inspected, when, and in whose name. The strongest signal on the platform, routinely left unread.
Trade Assurance
Orders placed and paid through the platform get a dispute path if shipment dates or documented specs are broken.
Covers nothing paid by direct wire, and nothing you failed to write into the order contract. Its ceiling is your paperwork, not your expectations.
What no badge can see
The platform verifies storefronts. China’s public registry verifies companies. The gap between the two is where buyers get hurt, and it is measurable. In our dataset of 5,580 exhibitors, 20.6% are registered as trading companies — and among traders with marketing copy on file, 2.4% describe themselves as manufacturers anyway (“our own factory”, “we produce”). The storefront and the registry disagree, and only one of them is a legal filing. The full factory-or-trader study quantifies the pattern.
The two scams that defeat every badge
- Off-platform payment. “Wire directly and save the fee” moves the order outside Trade Assurance in one step. Whatever happens next — quality, delay, silence — there is no dispute path. A discount for direct wire is a discount for removing your protection.
- The swapped beneficiary. At payment time an email arrives: the bank account has “changed”. Invoice-swap fraud targets your inbox, not the supplier. The fix is mechanical: the beneficiary must match the registered Chinese legal name exactly, and any change gets confirmed on a video call with a face you have already seen. The independent cross-check, in three steps
- Ask for the business licence and resolve the English storefront name to the registered Chinese legal name and USCC — name lookup does this from public-record profiles, free.
- Pull the registry record: business scope (manufacturer or trader), registered address, capital and age. Thirty seconds, and it answers what the badges cannot.
- Before the deposit: live video walkthrough of the claimed plant, and a beneficiary name that matches the licence. For orders that would hurt to lose, a third-party audit runs a few hundred dollars.

Alibaba is a legitimate marketplace, but it is a venue, not a counterparty: your order is with the supplier, not with Alibaba. Risk lives at the supplier level. Orders paid through the platform under Trade Assurance carry a dispute and refund path; orders wired off-platform carry none. Most documented losses trace to off-platform payment, a swapped beneficiary account, or a supplier misrepresenting what they are — all checkable before money moves.
What does Gold Supplier mean on Alibaba?
Gold Supplier is a paid annual membership tier, not an audit. The number of years shown measures how long the company has paid for membership — a longevity and investment signal, not proof of a factory, capability, or honesty. Treat it as "this supplier spends money on the channel", nothing more.
What does Verified Supplier mean on Alibaba?
Verified Supplier means a third-party inspection firm (such as SGS, TÜV or Intertek) conducted an on-site assessment of the company, and the report is attached to the profile. It is the strongest badge on the platform — read the actual report rather than the badge: it states what was inspected, when, and whether the premises belong to the company or a partner.
Does Trade Assurance protect me?
Trade Assurance covers orders placed and paid through Alibaba’s platform: if the shipment misses the contracted date or the goods materially differ from the documented specification, there is a dispute and refund process. It does not cover orders wired off-platform, verbal specifications that never made it into the order contract, or quality expectations you did not write down. Its protection is exactly as good as the paperwork behind the order.
