The lighting industry began in 1981-82 when Guzhen resident Yuan Daguang bought two wall lamps in Hong Kong, found their internal structure simple (wire, bent tube, bulb and socket), and organized five households to assemble copies. Small household workshops proliferated by 1986, drawing on plastics, wire, and hardware from nearby Foshan, Nanhai, and Xiaolan. The first China (Guzhen) International Lighting Fair was held in 1999. In 2002 the China National Light Industry Council jointly with the China Association of Lighting Industry awarded Guzhen the title of China Lighting Capital.
